I have observed that in old digital cameras, special receptors help to aim automatically. The actual sensors involving some surveillance cameras change in contrast, while others use a beam associated with infra-red (IR) light, specifically in low lighting. Higher spec cameras often use a combination of both models and may have Face Priority AF where the dslr camera can ‘See’ some sort of face as you concentrate only on that.
